So yeah, here's a new topic just for Akvaario's translations. Anyone who can speak Finnish is free to post his or her translation and also correct the others' translations if they feel the need. I'll start with three songs; "Älä kanna pelkoa", "Liian kaunis vailla suuntaa" and "Suunta on vain ylöspäin". My translations are very simple and I try to follow the original Finnish lyrics as strictly as I can. If someone comes up with a "prettier" way of translation, I'll be more than happy to correct my text!

Don't carry the fear [Älä kanna pelkoa]

Seconds, I was counting seconds
When does the door open
And you're my prisoner again
If I saw new marks in the skin
I'd lay in a bed with my eyes closed
Wondering the another one's name

Even though I knew that nothing's more beautiful than

Fall to the ground, laugh for hours
Everyone creates their own happiness, so don't carry, don't carry the fear

Eternity, now I'm counting the eternity
We have thousand years
And the whole crazy world
If your feet lead*, you mustn't slow down
Hey, that won't make it elapse
If your heart is all right

Yeah, I know that nothing's more beautiful than

Fall to the ground, laugh for hours
Everyone creates their own happines, so don't carry, don't carry the fear
Passing out into the night, worshipping the sky**
Everyone creates their own burden, so don't carry, don't carry the fear

* In this case the idea is that the feet are carrying someone _away_ from someone.
** Edit of edit of edit, or something. Thanks a lot for correcting, Niko!

-------------------------------

Too beautiful without a direction [Liian kaunis vailla suuntaa]

Hey, nothing's gonna work out
If you are going to give up again
When you should speak your mind
That's when I hope you'd shout
So that everyone could hear:
"I'm the one in charge here, get out of my way!"

You bend like the wet grain when the winds are doing their tricks

Too beautiful without a direction
The one that shouts loudly is the one that gets you
You save the others, not yourself
Run, girl, run fast
That road will lead you to a dead end

Those that steal your happiness
Are not worth your time*
Even if they would be talking about love
If every word breaks you
And every act makes it even worse
The tongue is discreted from the truth

Too beautiful without a direction...

*In the Finnish version "Are not worth your time" is actually sung before "Those that steal your happiness"; my English skills weren't good enough to make the sentence sound reasonable in the original order :D

---------------------------------------

The only way is up [Suunta on vain ylöspäin]

You look like a ghost when you wobble by
I ask you, why are the shadows growing
Under, under your gaze
You tell he made tracks, gathered his stuff
And your head gave up immediately
You ask: What on earth should I do now?

I say: I party, it always helps
The others toke their worries away*
You should just remember that

If you don't have trust
You can always get your hopes up**
by realizing that the only way is up
If the love comes to its end
Remember, you can get used to anything
Someone new will make your eyes shine bright

After a year you run by
I ask again, why are the shadows growing
Under, under your gaze
You tell you have thousand irons in the fire
Neither your mind or soul is getting any rest
You yell: "What on earth should I do now?"

I say: I party, it always helps
Others toke their worries away*
You should just remember that

If the incredulity is getting over you
You can always cheer up**
by realizing that the only way is up
If the love comes to its end
Remember, you can get used to anything
Someone new will make your eyes shine bright

The life is a crazy journey***
Even if you have a wall in front of you, you have to go on
You must never give up

If the incredulity is getting over you...

*Nothing here anymore. Thanks for correcting, Nico!
**In the Finnish lyrics Jonsu tells us to "rip the hope" from somewhere. In Finland, "revi siitä" is a very usual saying, literally meaning to "rip something from somewhere". Here's a lame example:
Dude 1: "I scored 500 points in this game!"
Dude 2: "Haha, u noob, I scored 650. Rip from that."
And lastly, thanks to Niko for correcting!
I don't know if they have a similiar saying in English, so I decided to explain it a bit.
***"On elo yhtä hullun matkaa" literally means "The life is just one big journey of a fool". And once again, thanks to Niko for correcting!

This translation was the most difficult to do of these three. I hope it sounds okay...

So, there are my translations for the first three songs of Akvaario. I hope they're okay!

Good work, Tuulisusi! Some comments:

Älä Kanna Pelkoa:
"Getting burned out in the night, worshipping the heaven"
- I think "sammuu yöhön, palvoo taivasta" means that someone passes out on the ground at night, so shouldn't it be something like "passing out into the night worshipping the sky"?

Suunta On Vain Ylöspäin:
"If the incredulity is getting over you"
- Or simply: "if you don't have trust"

"you can always cheer up"
- As far as I know "revi siitä" means "in your face" in English, but there's no way to use that expression in the translation. One alternative could be "you can get your hopes up", but I'm not sure if it's any closer to the Finnish sentence.

"The life is all crazy"
- An alternative: "Life is a crazy journey".

"Giving up is never a change".
- I suppose you mean "a chance". Sometimes I confuse those two words too. An alternative: "you must never give up".

One more thing about Suunta On Vain Ylöspäin.

"Makes the other worries go away"
- "Pajauttaa" means "to smoke weed" indeed. Jonsu mentioned it in this interview. I think the line means "the others forget their worries by smoking weed", but that's a pretty long translation for "toiset huolet pajauttaa". A shorter translation could be "the others burn their worries", but I'm not sure if it states clearly enough that it's about burning cannabis.

A couple of comments:

Älä kanna pelkoa
Hey, that won't make it elapse
Elapse is not the word to use here. The line is referring to the (sexless) genitals with the pronoun "it", effectively saying "have sex with anyone as you please". I'd replace it with Hey, it'll never wear out.

Suunta on vain ylöspäin
You tell it made tracks, gathered it's stuff
I don't think you should use "it" to refer to a grown person - ever. It's one of those things you can do in Finnish but not in English. I don't see an easy way around specifying a gender, so I'd replace it with he/his.

Makes the other worries go away
I'd simply say Others toke their worries away. It's short and it says what the original says.

Here is my sad attempt to translate Tuule tuuli. I heartily welcome any input to improve this.

Blow wind

Out of the ground I came, unto the ground I return(*)
If I have to decompose before you do
Cover me with sand or take me into the sea
I utter my last wish

Blow wind, show me where narrow waters flow
The narrow waters, do they meet by the lake?
Blow wind, show me where lonely paths lead
The lonely paths, do they meet by the field?

If I can, I'll wait at the boundary
I don't want to travel without you
I can secure the route in advance

(*) I want to say simply "Earth to earth" here, but that doesn't seem good, either. I used "out of" and "unto" to at least try to retain the reference.

This is my version of Sun oma, which literally translates to "your own". There are a few arguable points, but nothing that necessitates arguing with myself.

Yours

Step by step it'd be more difficult
To leave behind and forget
If you sink your roots into someone
You can never extricate yourself

I'll always be yours
Although there will be days when I don't care
And when our path is hard
I won't fade, I won't fade

If you give you must not take away
Otherwise our world would be cruel
If you build your hope into someone
You can never extricate yourself

Forever yours
Although there will be moments I don't get you
And when the world is hard
I won't fade, I won't fade

If you can't figure out the answer in life here and now
You can trust
When you're not in control
Someone else will guide you

*Edit*: now that I got into it, here's my version of Savuton ja onneton.

Smoke-free and unhappy

You have a frown on your face
And a laptop in your briefcase
Everything is not now but soon
As long as you'll please your boss

Seize the day
Come on a juice picnic
Carpe diem
And what have you
Still young, I guess
A night without shells
Carpe diem
The living room is not smoke-free

We have red eyes
And a mouth to reach for the ears
Hurrying is for those
Without the vibe

Seize the day
Come on a juice picnic
Carpe diem
And what have you
Still young, I guess
A night without shells
Carpe diem
My car is not smoke-free

Like you new Audi is
Smoke-free
Can't you see you're unhappy
Again you're in a hurry
You'll still be unhappy tomorrow
Smoke-free
Smoke-free and unhappy

*Edit #2:* here's Nirvanaan.

To nirvana

I remember it like yesterday
When I thought that after you
I'll never think of anyone else
The sky was full of purple
Neither one knew
That it's easy to lose one's colors

Painter - my soul - did I use it wrong

I cannot reach nirvana anymore
Is there a medicine
To return the colors to the sky
I can't take it - the gray

I remember it like yesterday
I noticed I don't
Feel the same spark anymore
Where does the fire go
Despite all the struck matches
It won't light even if you blow on it

I want to get the past back
Dive into the dark purple once more
Have a rest in the deep green
Kiss under the rainbow
Like before

*Edit #3:* Akvaario.

Aquarium

When they look at me, I'm happy
When they worship me, I'm whole
It's a real problem if I can't get more
I have to crawl along the stream of gazes

Into the aquarium away from work
When nothing is enough
Into the spotlight away from the emptiness
When nothing is enough

I strip in covers when I'm cold
Warmth is without and frost is within
Now I seek a home, a glass house
I don't feel happiness, I follow the thirst

*Edit #4:* I don't feel comfortable with this, as there is way too much unavoidable interpretation, but here's my version of Tuuliajolla.

Adrift

Sand in the outsoles
I traipse towards the winter
Word of the evening: longing
Word of the day: just empty

The summer nights addled my mind, I flipped out

And I broke into pieces
My heart stayed in Wien, my head in Paris
Never did I remember to write home
I'm adrift
I'm adrift

The face of a strange city
I loved too many
The old alleys of Naples
Changed into the light of Cannes

*Edit #5*: Kultaan kuun. This is beginning to sound so ridiculous that I'm done for now.

In the gold of the moon

Is there right and wrong?
Crazy people dishing out mercy and the number of days
Is everything an illusion? Where does the truth disappear?

In the gold of the moon it hides
Whispering from the shadows of trees
Beyond the mind it fades
Glowing in the silence

Is everything the same, only the years keep changing
Peoples worship money
Where does goodness evaporate?

Don't disappear into the trees
Don't sink into the lakes
Don't disappear
Don't sink
Stay along

Oh well, it seems like I made many, many mistakes... I'm very sorry about that. Maybe I should leave the translation work to those who really are good at it... :D anyway, I'll correct my mistakes right away.

@tuulisusi: don't lose heart! A well-placed mistake tends to teach everyone involved more than flawless execution. Also, it's been many years since the forum (the old one) actually had someone who made other translators obsolete, but we don't seem to have such people here.

I couldn't help myself from finishing the album. Maailma loppuu:

The world is ending

You told me the world is ending
You told me the world is ending
You begged me to lash you for falling into a trap
You feared you'd get used to the evil

I figured you'd lost it
I figured you'd lost it
Don't you see the world, everyone here makes mistakes
Mammoth, wake up from the ice

Hey give up, the past is gone already
You can't take the mistakes back
Hey give up, too many already
Bear regret

You panted in a language of madmen
You'd dwell on it for years
It is only chemistry, the body cheating us
But the mind can take away your happiness

Hey give up, the past is gone already
You can't take the mistakes back
Hey give up, too many already
Bear regret, grudge

Nobody can win if they
Harp on the past
I let myself go free

I thought you'd be relieved to know
I thought you'd be relieved to know
But you couldn't handle the truth
You scrammed, you didn't want to know

And finally Onnen syy:

Cause for happiness

I've woken up at six
Watered the flowers
Listened to the snoring
In the small hours

Hidden in the small pieces lies
Man's cause for happiness
The mind stays quiet
And doesn't run away

I see the face of the sleeping one
I scrawl on a paper
Hey dearest in the world
I'll be back soon

Hidden in the small words lies
Man's cause for happiness
They stay inside
And don't run away

Nico, thank you so much for the translations!!! :D

I'm not sure if I'm right, but to me it seems as if the finnish lyrics are more...meaningful. Somehow richer than the english lyrics.
